Chapter Nine

When Jana Mae awoke the next morning, I thought that we were sharing the same thoughts. It was pretty clear what she had to do and why she had to do it.

“You can stay at my place,” I said while we were still in bed. “And everything will be fine. I know there’s not a lot of room, but it’s just until you figure something else out.”

“Yeah,” she said, running a hand through her hair. Sitting in bed, she looked so angelic and so beautiful that I didn’t know how anyone could cheat on her. If she were mine, I didn’t think I would ever leave her side.

A shiver went down my spine as I briefly thought about that possibility. She could be mine, I realized, if she were free of Nathan.

Why was I having these thoughts? Who was I to think these things? Even if she broke up with her husband, which was fifty-fifty in this case, how could I think she would just jump into a relationship with me?

And even if she did jump into a relationship with me, what in my right mind made me think that I was ready?

“Jana Mae, you don’t have to leave this hotel until you’re ready,” I said. “And even when you are, I can come with you.”

“No,” she said quickly. “Don’t come with me.”

I raised my eyebrow at her.

“I want you to be safe…”

“I understand,” she said, her voice low. “But this is something that I have to do myself.”

I did understand that as well. Still, my heart beat wildly at the thought of her going back to that house alone. She didn’t have to do it if she didn’t want to, but I knew there was nothing I could do to stop her.

“Where’s Noah?” she asked.

“My brother is in town,” I answered. “So it wasn’t a problem. In fact, if there is a bright side of this, it’s that it was perfect timing.”

“Oh,” she replied. “Well...I guess so. Anyway, don’t worry about me. I’ve always been able to outsmart Nathan.”

“Yeah but…” I started and she shook her head.

“I’ll be fine,” she assured me.

“Alright, but will you call me later?” I asked, and she promised that she would. I needed to get home to Noah anyway, even though I didn’t want to. For the first time in my life, the idea of going home to my son was secondary to someone else.

Who was I?

I dropped her at her apartment building and had to fight not to go in and help her. I wasn’t even sure if her husband was home, or whether he would be angry, or whether they would have wild crazy makeup sex.

As I drove back to my cabin in the woods, my mind flickered back to the last days of Gwen’s life. She had said that she wanted me to be happy and that she had wanted me to take care of the family however I could. I didn’t know if that answer was finding a new mother for Noah or getting out of my line of work.
